Missouri Gas Energy released a short statement Wednesday afternoon regarding the Country Club Plaza-area explosion.
?We remain focused on supporting the ongoing investigation into the cause of last night?s incident and on ensuring the continued security of the site,? the statement said. ?Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted and their loved ones, and we want to thank the emergency responders for their efforts last night and their continued work today to help so many. Kansas City?s fire and police departments are among the very finest in the country, as was evidenced by their ability to quickly contain the fire and secure the area.?
The newest MGE statement is the utility?s second regarding the Tuesday evening blast that leveled JJ?s Restaurant at 410 W. 48th St. near the Plaza.
Tuesday evening, MGE said early indications were that an underground contractor had cut a gas line.
A gas line leak is the suspected cause of the blaze that appeared to have claimed one life and injured 14 others.
Missouri Public Service Commission Chairman Kevin Gunn said in a Wednesday PSC meeting that early reports indicated a contractor was drilling to install a fiber-optic cable when a 2-inch gas line was punctured.
Kansas City officials gave their second news briefing at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to announce that a body, which has not yet been identified, was recovered near the bar on the west side of the establishment.
Mayor Sly James was asked whether MGE had been invited to the briefing, to which James responded that the utility was aware that the briefing was going on.
