EYES ON LONDON: Opening ceremony secrets _ sort of

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

CEREMONY OF WONDERS (NO BLABBING)

Danny Boyle has let 60,000 people in on the secrets of his Olympic opening ceremony ? and then begged them to keep the information to themselves.

Tens of thousands of spectators who attended a technical rehearsal for Friday's ceremony entered the stadium to be greeted by signs imploring them to "Save the Surprise." Boyle, the Academy Award-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire," addressed the crowd with a personal plea not to blab, for the sake of future viewers and the 10,000 volunteer performers who have been working on the spectacle for months.

Many details have already leaked out out of the ceremony, titled "Isles of Wonder" and inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and by two centuries of British history and culture.

And Boyle left some gaps in Monday's run-through where extra-secret segments will appear on Friday.

Most of those who saw the show seem to be keeping mum. Many tweeted enthusiastically, but vaguely, about the contents of the show, which mixes grand spectacle with British humor and irreverence.

Many of the spectators streaming out of the stadium afterward said they had been wowed ?even those who had been skeptical at first.

BETTER THAN SYDNEY?

The Aussie team's chief says the Brits might just do a better job than the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Nick Green tells Australian reporters Tuesday that in his opinion London 2012 will be "the best Olympics ever." The predominantly Australian media responded with mock shock.

Australia's games 12 years ago have until now been considered among the best. But, says Green, "London's learned a lot out of Sydney ... my view is it'll be the best ever."

EDINBURGH'S FINEST

Olympic fever hasn't swept through all of Britain ? at least not yet.

Most people in Edinburgh, Scotland, are focused on the upcoming Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an annual festival and demonstration that takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. But that doesn't mean there wasn't a cheer inside pubs such as Maggie Dickinson's on Grassmarket on Monday when Edinburgh's own cycling star Sir Chris Hoy ? already Scotland's most successful Olympian ? was chosen to carry the British flag for the Opening Ceremony.

Hoy won his first Olympic gold at the Athens Games, but cemented his legacy in Beijing, where he became the first Brit to win three gold medals in a single Olympics since Henry Taylor in 1908. Hoy was chosen to carry the Union Jack at the Closing Ceremony in 2008, and will now carry it for the Opening Ceremony on Friday after a vote of the 542 members of the British team. Hoy will be trying to defend his gold medals in the keirin and the team sprint when the track cycling program begins.

Just how popular is Hoy in Scotland? The Scottish National Velodrome being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be named in his honor.

___

EXTRA TROOPS

The British government has just announced it is deploying an extra 1,200 more troops to protect Olympic venues. There's no indication that the step was taken as a result of any specific threat.

British troops stepped in earlier this month after the private security company hired to protect the games failed to hire the number of guards it promised.

___

FROWN FOR THE CAMERA

Only boring, mean people can be a part of the Olympic Games. That goes for athletes, volunteers, journalists ? everybody.

Don't believe it? Just look at those bulky credentials around everyone's necks.

The International Olympic Committee requires that mug shots have a completely colorless facial expression. They say it's needed for security purposes, but it sure makes us all look miserable ? or worse.

U.S. women's soccer player Sydney Leroux put it best when she tweeted a photo of her credential. She said: "I look like I would burn down your house."

___

FLAME MYSTERY

So where will the Olympics flame burn? Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal says the ruby-red sculpture that towers over London's Olympic Stadium is not the cauldron that will hold the ceremonial flame. Mittal had floated the idea, but plans arrived too late for consideration.

The lighting of the cauldron is always a big moment for the Olympics, and organizers usually withhold details to ensure drama. But usually there is some structure ? somewhere ? that hints where the flame will burn.

Suspicion had long fallen on the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower, but Mittal says the tower is art, not a fire vessel for the games that start Friday.

___

GAMES ? WHAT GAMES?

AP's Joseph White reports in from Scotland:

Yes, I'm at the Olympics ? but I'm some 400 miles (640 kilometers) from center stage.

Glasgow is hosting some of the soccer matches but the Scottish city doesn't have much of an Olympic vibe. In London, one can hardly walk 20 feet without spotting a special Olympic traffic lane or a billboard or some sort of notice; in Glasgow, there is a lonely sign at the main train station telling fans where to queue to catch the subway to historic Hampden Park, plus some Olympic-themed banners lining the streets.

The action starts with a pair of women's matches Wednesday ? two days before the opening ceremony in London ? and the locals have given away thousands of tickets to schools and other youth so the 52,000-seat stadium won't feel so empty.

The two cities can't even agree on the weather.

London had a beautiful sunny day Monday, while Glasgow was so wet and dreary that the U.S. women's team had to take their team photo in the stadium's VIP seats instead of on the field to stay dry. Tuesday in Glasgow, however, is sunnier.

OLYMPIC VARNISH

Kati Elliott has got a nail for you.

The 20-year-old manicurist can paint 240 different designs ? all versions of national flags ? at the P&G Salon in the Olympic media village. The company has similar salons in the athletes village and in central London at the US Olympic family home, where they cater to athletes' moms.

On a recent day, Kati was sporting designs for Great Britain, Sao Tome and Principe, USA, Myanmar and South Africa, all on one hand. The most complicated design? She thinks it's the U.S. Virgin Islands, which packs an eagle, state colors and a shield all into one nail.

___

TORCH INTERLUDE

From AP's Fergus Bell, a Londoner:

At 8:47 a.m. the Olympic Torch passed along the route near my house, and I was able to experience the torch relay as it was meant to be experienced. And what is that, precisely?

Hundreds of excited men, women and children lined the residential suburban streets. Next came the huge police presence: I counted at least six police motorcycles before I caught a glimpse of the procession.

One poor woman innocently reversed out of her driveway at the wrong moment and was promptly surrounded. The police were good-natured; with three days left, they've probably seen it all.

Then you see the runner. Well, not quite.

First you have at least three buses representing various Olympic sponsors adorned with toned promotional staff cheering about the runner behind. When members of the crowd do finally catch a glimpse of the runner decked out in the official white torch relay uniform, they rush in, cameras out, as they cheer and shriek.

And then it's over. In moments, it's all gone. The cheers echo down the street as everyone disperses, each carrying a big grin.

___

RIVER GOLF

Talk about a water trap.

U.S. PGA Tour players Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson previewed golf's inclusion at the 2016 Olympics by hitting purple balls toward a floating green on London's River Thames in late evening sunshine.

The tee box was on a barge and the floating green bobbed under the giant Olympic rings on the historic bridge. Using lob wedges, Garcia got three of his five shots on the bright green artificial turf island from around 75 yards while Johnson got two ? or maybe it was three.

The pair struggled to see where those little magenta balls ? the official color of the London Olympics ? landed. Curious Londoners peered over the edge of the bridge in bright evening sunshine to see what was going on. Some waved flags.

Golf will be included at the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, returning for the first time since 1904.

Said Garcia just before the stunt on the choppy water: "Courses usually don't move this much, but it's definitely going to be fun."

Red Dead Redemption 2 Hinted by Rockstar - Video Games Blogger

Rockstar Games have finally discussed the possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2, stating that news about a prequel or sequel to 2010?s blockbuster open world Western Red Dead Redemption is forthcoming.

To quote the Rockstar Games website answer to fan questions:

?Stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series.?

?Awesome, we love Red Dead too ? and are thrilled that so many of you loved John Marston?s tale and are excited for more epic Western action. As we mentioned in our last set of Asked & Answereds to similar questions about the future of other game franchises like Bully and L.A. Noire, we don?t always rush to make sequels but that does not mean that we won?t get to them eventually. Stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series.?

Hmmm, let?s muse this over? Rockstar could turn Red Dead Redemption 2 into a prequel with John still in his old gang, or after the Undead Nightmare DLC they could go to extremes and turn John into a zombie. What are your ideas?

As to where I got the weird zombie idea from, watch the Undead Nightmare final cutscene:

Would you like John Marston to retun as a zombie in Red Dead Redemption 2?

Here Are The 13 Most Viral Olympic Ads So Far - Business Insider

The Olympics are right around the corner and the 60 or so brands that are official partners of this year's games are gearing up their ads, and that includes viral campaigns. Unruly Media put together a nice graphic to show who is doing the best, and it might come as a surprise to many.

According to Unruly's data, the company doing the best is not a member of the usual sports sponsor suspects?Visa, Coca-Cola, British Airways, Adidas, BP, Samsung, or BMW?it's Procter & Gamble. And it's not just "the best"?it's killing the competition. Not only does Procter & Gamble have four of the top 13 most-shared videos, it has one video that has more than six times the shares of videos No.2 through No.99 combined.

*Note: Rankings were based on the data from Unruly Media at 11:50 AM ET July 17, 2012.

Acoustic tweezers capture tiny creatures with ultrasound

Monday, July 2, 2012

A device about the size of a dime can manipulate living materials such as blood cells and entire small organisms, using sound waves, according to a team of bioengineers and biochemists from Penn State.

The device, called acoustic tweezers, is the first technology capable of touchlessly trapping and manipulating Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a one millimeter long roundworm that is an important model system for studying diseases and development in humans. Acoustic tweezers are also capable of precisely manipulating cellular-scale objects that are essential to many areas of fundamental biomedical research.

Acoustic tweezers use ultrasound, the same noninvasive technology doctors use to capture images of the fetus in the womb. The device is based on piezoelectric material that moves when under an electrical current. The vibrations pass through transducers attached to the piezoelectric substrate, where they are converted into standing surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The SAWs create pressure fields in the liquid medium that hold the specimen. The simple electronics in the device can tune the SAWs to precisely and noninvasively hold and move the specimen or inorganic object.

"We believe the device can be easily manufactured at a cost far lower than say, optical tweezers, which use lasers to manipulate single particles," said Tony Jun Huang, associate professor of bioengineering, whose group pioneered acoustic tweezers. "Optical tweezers require power densities 10,000,000 times greater than our acoustic tweezers, and the lasers can heat up and damage the cells, unlike ultrasound."

For many biological systems, acoustic tweezers will provide an excellent tool to mimic the conditions inside the body where cells are subject to waves of pressure and pulses of chemicals. The researchers published their results in this week's online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Acoustic tweezers will be used to position cells for interrogation by pulses of drug-like molecules to test as well as to exert mechanical forces on the cell wall," according to Stephen Benkovic, Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry and holder of the Eberly Family Chair in Chemistry, whose group contributed to the paper, "The cells will contain bio-chemical markers, so we can observe the effect of drug pulses or pressure on the cell's biochemistry."

Acoustic tweezers are very versatile, said Huang. "We can manipulate a single cell or we can manipulate tens of thousands of cells at the same time."

Currently, the size of objects that can be moved with acoustic tweezers ranges from micrometers to millimeters, although with higher frequencies, it should be possible to move objects in the nanoscale regime, the researchers believe. Further work will include modifying the device to accommodate more fundamental biomedical studies with the Benkovic group.

Ultimately, the patent pending technology could lead to compact, noninvasive and inexpensive point-of-care applications, such as blood cell and cancer cell sorting and diagnostics. For now, the ability to trap and manipulate a living C. elegans for study is proof of their device's potential utility.

Obama to sign student loan, road building bill

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Friday plans to sign into law legislation that prevents interest rate increases on new loans to millions of college students and maintains jobs on transportation projects across the nation.

The bill signing at the White House will feature construction workers and college students. Congress approved the legislation last week with a bipartisan majority. Obama had made the expiring student loan interest rates an issue for months.

The bill allows more than $100 billion to be spent on highway, mass transit and other transportation programs during the next two years. Those projects would have expired June 30.

It also maintains interest rates of 3.4 percent for subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates that would have doubled for new loans beginning July 1 if Congress hadn't acted.

?Mint For Investments? Startup SigFig Goes Mobile With New iPhone And Android Apps

64280_sigfig_logoMost banks have begun to provide native apps -- or at the very least, mobile-friendly websites -- to give users access to their funds and information about their accounts. But when it comes to their investment accounts, few have very much transparency into where their money has been invested, how much they are paying in fees, how their investments are performing and the like. San Francisco-based startup SigFig wants to change that, not just on the web, but now also on mobile devices. SigFig lets users connect all their various investment accounts -- including bank accounts, 401k plans, IRAs, etc. -- onto a single dashboard. That gives them the ability to see how their investments are performing in one beautiful visual platform. SigFig originally launched as a web app, but it's now releasing iPhone and Android apps that will give users on the go all the same information on their mobile devices.

Gear4 speaker dock supports USB audio for Jelly Bean at Google I/O 2012 (hands-on video)

Gear4 speaker dock supports USB audio for Jelly Bean at Google I/O 2012

Another day, another speaker dock. We initially dismissed Gear4's latest accessory at Google I/O 2012 until we noticed that the attached Nexus 7 was playing audio via the USB port instead of the headphone jack (or wirelessly over Bluetooth for that matter). It turns out that Jelly Bean supports USB audio, a feature that's bound to spearhead a whole new generation of accessories for Android devices. Gear4's universal speaker dock with alarm clock radio is the first to handle USB audio. While the sound for any app can be routed to the USB port in Jelly Bean, the functionality is missing from older versions of Android. Thankfully, Gear4 includes an app with its accessory that can be used to set alarms, sync time, tune the radio and play media over the USB port on legacy versions of Android. Want to know more? GOP: John Roberts' shift a major boon for Mitt Romney

Contrary to conventional wisdom, an anti-tax backlash over the Supreme Court?s blockbuster decision upholding Obamacare could propel Mitt Romney all the way to the Oval Office, national Republicans said, as irate voters pumped millions into his campaign coffers in the wake of the surprise ruling.

Read the Supreme Court decision here.

Led by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the high court ruled 5-4 yesterday that Obamacare?s health insurance mandate is constitutional because it is a tax, and Congress has the power to levy. President Obama had originally promised the overhaul wouldn?t tax the middle class, and Republicans quickly seized on the ruling to point out that is exactly what the law does.

?Chief Justice John Roberts has all but gift-wrapped the election for Republicans with this ruling,? said Keith Appell, a GOP consultant based in Washington, D.C. ?Now every single Democrat will have to defend the largest tax increase in American history during a bad economy in an election year.?

Meanwhile, Republicans across the country were mobilizing to ensure the ruling, which would mandate health care coverage for all Americans by 2014, is overturned.

?I think it?s going to play well for Gov. Romney. The emails I?ve received since this ruling came out show that folks are fired up and they want to get involved,? said Glenn A. McCall, a Republican national committeeman in South Carolina.

Who wins, who loses in the Obamacare decision? Join in the Friday Throwdown today at noon.

The decision brought the former Bay State governor a flood of donations, as his campaign said it raked in cash at a rate of nearly $300,000 an hour immediately after the ruling was announced. All told, the Romney Victory Fund took in $2.5 million from 24,000 individuals as of 7 p.m., said spokesman Ryan Williams.

?It?s an extremely significant amount ? one of the largest amounts we?ve received in response to an event that?s occurred during the campaign,? Williams said.

Romney used yesterday?s ruling to draw a sharp contrast with the president.

?If we want to get rid of Obamacare we?re going to have to replace President Obama, and my mission is to make sure we do exactly that,? said Romney. ?Help us defeat Obamacare, help us defeat the liberal agenda.?

However, Marty Connors, the former chairman of the Alabama GOP, said the high court ruling could hurt Romney with independent swing voters.

?The person who calls themselves a moderate or an independent is now capable of manipulation by the Obama administration because they?ll say they have a Supreme Court endorsement,? said Connors.

Gov. Deval Patrick also suggested yesterday that Romney?s role in passing health care reform in Massachusetts would undercut his arguments against the health care overhaul.

(AP) ? The maker of the BlackBerry is running out of time.

Research In Motion Ltd.'s stock fell to a nine-year low Friday, a day after the Canadian company said phones running its upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system won't be available until after the holiday shopping season.

Sales of the once-pioneering BlackBerry phones, which now look ancient next to the latest iPhones and Android devices, fell 41 percent in the latest quarter and likely won't pick up again until new phones come out.

By then, it might be too late. When the new BlackBerrys go on sale in the first three months of 2013 ? assuming there won't be yet-another delay ? people will have even more choices:

? This fall, Apple Inc. is expected to release a new iPhone with an improved Siri virtual assistant. It promises a new mapping service that sports voice navigation.

? Samsung and other phone makers are continually selling new models that run Google's Android operating software. The next version of Android, expected in mid-July, will have improved search and photo sharing.

? Phones running a revamped version of Microsoft's Windows system are also coming this fall.

BlackBerrys were once a staple in corporate environments because of their reputation for security and reliability. People pulled them out to check email in restaurants, living rooms and vacation homes such that they became known as "CrackBerrys." When he became president, Barack Obama refused to part with his BlackBerry despite worries about complying with public-record laws.

But BlackBerrys lost their cachet when iPhones came along and demonstrated that smartphones could be good for more than email. People could now watch movies, play games, read books and update their Facebook statuses easily. Outside software programmers started spewing out apps to extend the devices' functionality and popularity.

RIM portrays BlackBerry 10 as its way of catching up. It promises the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

RIM unveiled it last October, long after BlackBerrys began to slip in stature. Analysts had hoped to see BlackBerry 10 phones by early 2012, but RIM said in December that they won't be available until late in the year because they needed a chipset that wasn't available yet. Now, RIM said the phones won't be out until 2013.

With yet another delay, BlackBerry loyalists may not be willing to wait longer. Already, the BlackBerry's U.S. market share has plummeted from 41 percent in 2007 to less than 4 percent in the first three months of 2012, according to research firm IDC.

"The possibility of a comeback is rapidly diminishing," analyst Steven Li at Raymond James said in a research note. He added that the delay also could discourage outside software developers from writing BlackBerry 10 apps that rival the thousands available for iPhones and Android devices.

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said RIM's main concern should be "more about staying alive. We believe the company needs to be careful with its cash or risk facing bankruptcy."

The company has hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help evaluate various recovery plans, including opportunities to partner with other companies and license software. The company has said it's not actively looking to sell itself, but it wants to be prepared.

Most analysts have started looking at RIM not as a company with a future but as a collection of parts that could be split up and sold separately to the highest bidder. RIM's portfolio of patents is particularly valuable in a climate where Apple and other phone makers are suing each other over the originality of phone designs and techniques.

RIM disclosed the BlackBerry 10 delay after the market closed Thursday as part of its quarterly earnings report. RIM's stock fell $1.74, or 19 percent, to close Friday at $7.39. That's the lowest price since September 2003. RIM did not return messages for comment Friday.

RIM's revenue fell 43 percent to $2.8 billion in the latest quarter, which ended June 2. Besides selling fewer phones, RIM tended to sell less-profitable models and had to offer discounts in the U.S. to stem consumer defections. RIM also had a higher proportion of subscribers on lower-cost plans, meaning less revenue from email, messaging and other services offered through those devices.

Gross profit margin in the quarter was 28 percent, compared with 44 percent a year ago and 33 percent in the previous quarter. To make up for that, RIM is looking to cut $1 billion in expenses this year, which will include a 30 percent reduction in its workforce.

During a conference call with analysts Thursday, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said the company is expecting the next several quarters to be "very challenging."

Analysts at Nomura Securities said management appears to be pushing price cuts as a way to keep people buying BlackBerrys until the new system "comes in to save the day in 2013." But that strategy, he said, is one that "has a very low likelihood of success and that will most likely drive RIM into irrelevance."
